DIY playdough

Playdough really is awesome. It can tame even a three-year-old whose sandwich has been cut into triangles instead of squares.

Best of all, you can keep this one in an airtight tub or ziplock bag and pull it out later for another ten minutes to yourself!

Things you'll need

  • Mixing bowl and spoon
  • 2 cups of all purpose/plain flour
  • 1/2 cup of table salt
  • 4 tablespoons of cream of tartar
  • 1 cup of boiling water
  • 1/4 cup of oil
  • Optional: food colouring and/or glitter

What to do

  1. Get your little poppet to mix the flour, salt, cream of tartar and glitter together in a bowl
  2. If you're using food colouring, add it to the boiling water (erm, adults only for the next few steps)
  3. Add the water and oil to the dry ingredients and mix well
  4. Let it cool for a minute then tip it out and knead it until it's cool enough for the littley

Ideas for further play

  • Once your little one has had a good play using their hands, offer them some tools to try - like a rolling pin, a fork or some dough stamps
  • Toddler-safe scissors are great for cutting and shaping playdough
